About Maine High School Football
High School Football in Maine is becoming one of the fastest growing varsity sports in the entire country. Going back to 1991 the state has seen 18 new programs enter the varsity ranks with several more to go. Further proof of this sports explosion was a story Sports Illustrated wrote as part of their Friday Night Lights series regarding the 2007 Class A state championship game between Bonny Eagle and Lawrence. But football in Maine isn't a new concept. The Maine Principals Association, the governing board for high school sports in Maine, first started crowning state champions in 1950 but the sport has roots in the Pine Tree state that date all the way back to the turn of the twentieth century. This is evidence by a recent research on the longest running high school football rivalries in the country which includes the Cony-Gardiner classic as well as the Thornton Academy-Biddeford "Battle of the Bridge" which dates back to their first games in 1892 and 1893 respectively. Both were listed in a page covering the longest running rivalries in the United States. The annual Thanksgiving Day game, played at Fitzpatrick Stadium between Portland and Deering, dates back to 1911 and is the 19th longest running Thanksgiving Day game in the United States
