Sitting Bull-Pen Disaster for Chiefs in 11-6 Loss to Sox
If you like pristine, textbook baseball, Millcroft Park was not the place to be on Thursday night. But if you like a good old coin flip................... or perhaps a shiny postage stamp (causing pitchers to fight the strike zone like it owed them money), then this game was an absolute masterclass!
The "Tone" was set early on as home plate resembled a 1989 United States 28-cent postage stamp honoring the Hunkpapa Lakota leader himself Sitting Bull.
Burlington starter Kayleb McLaughlin came out of the bullpen looking for the strike zone and found everything but it. The determined hurler tried to thread the needle but suffered death by a thousand walks instead! Despite earning the win the tall righty gave up 3 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) over 3 and 2/3s innings, striking out 4 and walking a ghastly 9. Uncharacteristic of a pitcher with pinpoint accuracy and only 2 walks on the season (prior to Thursday).
Colton Roberts fate was equally frustrating. The Chiefs starter took the loss for Dundas, throwing 3 innings, giving up 7 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits, striking out 4 and walking 4.
Matt Alexander came in in relief for Dundas. Matt mistook the Thursday night affair for a Savannah Banana's audition. When it was all said and done Matt did not make the cut, twirling 2 innings of 3 hit baseball, surrendering 4 runs (3 earned) on 2 walks and 3 punchies.
The lone bright spot on the bump was reliever Dylan "Pedro" Grosul. Pedro looked feversish as he threw 25 cans (I mean pitches) over 2 and 1/3 innings, striking out 5 and somehow walking none. Echoes could be heard in the stands equating his pinpoint control to the good karma gained pregame as he ran his solo land acknowledgement between the dugout and the train tracks!
The offense for the Burlington White Sox was led by Cossitt Jr. Mostly because Josh decided that hitting the ball hard just once was plenty of work for one evening. Jr's league leading 10th double would plate 3 and when the dust settled Josh would have 4 RBIs in the contest to propel the Sox to victory!
As a team, Burlington accumulated 9 hits in the game. Sean Kretz (the #9 hitter), led the Sox with 2 hits in 3 at bats.
J-Lay proved the most patient of all the White Sox with 2 of the team's 6 walks.
Colton Roberts paced the Chiefs offense. From the 7 hole the patient righty had 2 walks and went 1-1 with 3 RBIs.
Leadoff hitter Matt Alexander led Dundas with 2 hits in 3 at bats. He also led the Chiefs with 2 hidden ball tricks!
Dundas does not have to wait long for revenge. The retaliatory raid will commence Sunday night at Volunteer Field against your beloved Burlington White Sox!
